Planned vs actual (PvA)

What is Planned vs actual (PvA)?

Planned vs actual (PvA) compares the effort planned in the allocation plan with the effort actually spent according to timesheets, to measure variance and improve forecasts.

Key points

A recurring variance reveals biased estimates, underestimated run work, or drifting projects. Steering committees rely on it to adjust the plan.

Formula

PvA variance = actual effort − planned effort; variance % = variance ÷ planned effort × 100

Example

20 planned days, 26 logged days: +6 days, or +30%.
