Available capacity

What is Available capacity?

Available capacity is the time truly usable on projects, after subtracting leave, public holidays, absences, training, and run or support work.

Key points

It is the denominator of most capacity metrics. Overestimating it is the leading cause of unrealistic plans.

It is computed per person, then rolled up per team, skill, or period.

Formula

Available capacity = working days − leave − absences − training − run/support

Example

In a 21-working-day month with 2 days of leave and 4 days of run work, project capacity is 15 days.
