FTE (full-time equivalent)

Last updated :

What is FTE (full-time equivalent)?

FTE (full-time equivalent) expresses workload or capacity as a number of full-time people: 1 FTE equals one person working 100% of the period.

Key points

Two half-time people make 1 FTE. FTE lets you compare headcount with different statuses (part-time, contractors, apprentices).

Do not confuse contractual FTE with available FTE: after leave, training, and run work, one contractual FTE often delivers only 0.6 to 0.8 FTE of project capacity.

Formula

FTE = hours worked in the period ÷ full-time hours in the period

Example

A person at 80% for 12 months = 0.8 FTE. A contractor working 3 days a week = 0.6 FTE.
